Red Wine Spill
Dilemma:
You have a room full of guests and someone spilled red wine on your carpet. Everyone is calling out their remedies - from club soda to cleaning vinegar to hair spray.
Don’t use a hair dryer. Don’t rub or scrub the stain - it will be harder to remove.
The following solution is time consuming, but it works. But you need to move fast!
Solution:
You will need:
1 cup of table salt
16 ounces of boiling hot water in a pitcher
2 cups of baking soda
2 clean sponges
4 clean washcloths
a large, light-color thick ‘n thirsty bath towel, the thicker the better
1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide -you’ll need one-third of the bottle
1 can of Resolve carpet cleaner
1 can of plain regular shaving cream (no gels or designer fragrances)
something that weighs about 5 pounds.
Directions:
Immediately spread the table salt around the perimeter of the stain. It will soak up any wine that comes close to it and act as a barrier to stop the wine from extending over more carpet.
Quickly blot up as much liquid as possible until there is no wine puddling.
In a pitcher, pour 2 cups of baking soda into 16 ounces of boiling hot water. Mix well.
Pour half of the baking soda-hot water solution directly on the stain and let it soak in for 3 or 4 minutes.
Blot heavily with a clean washcloth to soak up excess liquid. Press hard.
Pour one-third of bottle of hydrogen peroxide directly on the stain and let sit for 5 minutes.
Blot heavily with a clean washcloth to soak up excess liquid.
Pour the last 8 ounces of baking soda-hot water solution directly on the stain and let it soak another 3 or 4 minutes.
Blot heavily with a clean washcloth to soak up the liquid.
Take your large bath towel and press down hard on the stain to dry it out a little more.
Spray the stain with about two inches shaving cream until the spot is totally covered with cream.
Use sponge to gently rub the cream into the stain, spreading the cream to one inch outside the perimeter of the stain (the clean part of carpet).
Lay the dry part of your thick bath towel over the shaving cream.
Put your five pound weight on top of the towel directly over the area of the stain.
Leave it overnight or about 8 hours, until shaving cream has dried.
Remove towel and check for dryness. If not dry, leave open to the air until dry.
When dried sufficiently, vacuum up the dry shaving cream residue.
With your last sponge, use your Resolve carpet cleaner and follow the “tough stain” directions on the label.
Vacuum again when done.
